Media convergence

The coming together of media content services, telecoms and internet business calls for a profound rethink of operators' business strategies. It also requires a reexamination of existing regulation of the media sector (much of which is based on a model of television broadcasting) – see section on AVMS.

And as media businesses diversify their revenues, so new regulatory issues may arise such as data protection or e-commerce. Access to radiospectrum is also being reviewed, as the switch from analogue to digital broadcasting has not only enabled broadcasters to launch new channels but has also freed up some spectrum for non-broadcast uses.
